Autistic Spectrum Disorder and Asperges

Autism and Asperges, along with their associated indicators are now well known due to increased awareness and media coverage. Reduced Social Awareness and Interaction, excessive need for routine and unusual obsessions can leave children detached and difficult to communicate with.

Each of our ASD resources is as individual as the child. Whilst many share common difficulties such as those named above, the degree of need and existing coping mechanisms will vary. Due to the very nature of individuals with autism, heightening their interest to gain compliance is essential. Although we require a profile in order to compile resources specific to your needs, the following is an initial list of the support we offer:

Understanding Emotions and Teamwork

A progressive, custom-made course of 20 minute sessions designed to help children recognise and understanding a variety of emotions whilst learning to work within a group of children. For example, a pupil with ASD or Asperges would initially work with an adult, identifying likes, dislikes, social preferences and learning a specific skill (such as juggling with scarves). During the second session, a second, compatible pupil would be chosen to take part in activities and most importantly, for the focus child to teach their new skill. The program then progresses through various levels including how external stimuli, affects emotions, recognising those emotions and possible causes and working within a group.

Make a Face Mirrors

A fantastic group activity, where children mimic facial expressions from cue cards. Each child is encouraged to analyse the various features of the particular expression, and recognise those both in themselves and one another. Children then describe those emotions to one another, suggesting possible reasons for the related feelings. This is also available with cards which provide hints and scenarios to match with each expression.

Behaviour cues

Simple, but effective 'Body calm, eyes looking, mouth closed, head thinking,' colour coded behaviour prompts for use during input times or group activity sessions. These are appropriate for whole class use, with both displays and individual reminder prompts available.

Stationary template

Desk-top stationary template for classroom tools such as a ruler, pen, pencil and rubber. This handy tool allows children to have individual ownership of their belongings, have the necessary tools readily available, provides routine and avoids equipment being used at inappropriate times. Whilst some children require 'fidget tools' throughout the day, it may be desirable to have designated 'toys' for discretion and effectiveness. We hold several examples of 'fidget toys' within our library if you would like to trial potential options.

Price: £2. All materials included (plus postage and packaging).

Managing emotions assistance

Our subtle resources provide clear, concise communication of negative emotions to adults, avoiding escalation and possible reactions which may in turn cause segregation and exclusion. Children are helped to recognise signs of frustration and upset, and are encouraged to express this in a controlled manner. Adults are then able to help to find a solution or de-escalate the situation.

Visual Timetable

As well as standard, academic formats, our timetables can be designed to meet any requirements including theme and specific labels (some of which can not be altered by the child). For those children struggling with structure in their home environment, we are also able to produce visual displays reflecting home-based activities.
